People > A day in the life of a Firefighter

Zero eight five nine is announced over the public address system.  This precise timing marks the change of shift between the night and day watches and echoes around the station.  This happens without fail at this time, every day of the year.

Another day in the Fire Service starts, for thousands like me all over the country.  My Watch and I are assembled at the rear of the engine house on parade awaiting role call.

The Watch Commander takes parade and issues instructions to the Watch.  These instructions detail each crew members function for the day’s shift.  I wonder, will I drive or will I be nominated as breathing apparatus wearer?  I don’t have a preference I enjoy every aspect of my work.

“Blue Watch, Blue Watch Shun”, the Watch is brought to attention by the Watch Commander, who then proceeds to detail the appliance riders and the watch itinerary for the day.
