The purpose of this appliance is to provide support to crews dealing with hazardous material incidents. The main roles are to provide chemical protective clothing, Specialist decontamination and assist in environmental protection.

Equipment carried for these tasks includes:

  • Gas tight suits.
  • Decontamination shower.
  • Leak sealing equipment.
  • Chemical containment and absorption materials.
  • Extended duration breathing apparatus sets.
  • Hazardous material identification information.
  • Radiation Monitoring Equipment.
  • The vehicle also carries breathing apparatus main control board, for co-ordinating protracted breathing apparatus incidents.

The chemical incident unit is based at Sprowston Fire Station and carries a crew of up to 5 fire fighters.
