Press Releases Crucial Crew comes to Yarmouth

Up to 1000 school children in the Great Yarmouth area will be learning vital safety lessons in a hands-on way next week as Crucial Crew comes to town.

Co-ordinated by Norfolk County Council's Fire and Rescue Service, the week-long event -which uses ten-minute interactive sessions to teach crucial safety tips - takes place at the Cherry Tree Holiday Park, Mill Road, Yarmouth from Monday (February 26).

It features theatre-style, interactive scenarios recreating hazardous situations to which children may be exposed in their everyday life.

Pupils are placed in situations which simulate potential danger, such as a bedroom fire. The experiences seek, within a controlled environment, to raise awareness and provide practical and memorable advice on what to do.

Agencies and scenarios are as follows:-

*St John Ambulance - First aid
* Norfolk Police (Yarmouth) - Personal safety
* Great Yarmouth Connections - Alcohol and drug awareness
* Norfolk County Council Trading Standards - Safe shopping
* British Transport Police - Railway safety
* Environment Agency - Flooding
* Youth Offending Team - Anti-bullying
* Great Yarmouth Borough Council Environmental Health Department - Hygiene/ handwashing
* Coastguard - Seaside safety
* Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service - Fire safety

Event co-ordinator Doug Underwood, from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said: "One of the great things about Crucial Crew is the interactive nature of the safety events. The agencies taking part report great success with their delivery of safety messages in this way.

"This time round special thanks must go to Cherry Tree Holiday Park who have provided the site free of charge for the event and the main sponsors Great Yarmouth Crime Reduction Partnership who have generously donated £7,500 for books, packs, certificates and other support materials."

Naji Darwish, of the Great Yarmouth Crime Reduction Partnership, said: "Crucial Crew shows how different agencies work together to give key advice through "real-life" scenarios.  It's high impact and young people enjoy it.  It makes Great Yarmouth safer, both now and in the future."
