Prevention and Protection > Crucial safety week returns to Norwich

More than 1000 schoolchildren will be learning vital safety lessons next week as Crucial Crew returns to Norwich.

The week-long event (Sept 24 - 28), which helps youngsters learn through experience, is being held in the Presidential Pavilion at the Royal Norfolk Showground, Costessey.

Co-ordinated by Norfolk County Council's Fire and Rescue Service, the event - which uses ten-minute interactive sessions to teach crucial safety tips - is the third (check) of its kind to be held in Norwich.

Pupils are placed in situations which simulate potential danger, such as a bedroom fire. The experiences seek, within a controlled environment, to raise awareness and provide practical and memorable advice on what to do.

The 10 agencies taking part are:

Coastguard - Seaside Safety
Forestry Commission - Forest Safety
Norfolk Police - Personal Safety
British Transport police - Railway Safety
St John Ambulance - First Aid
The National Grid - Gas Safety
EDF Energy - Electrical Safety
Norfolk Youth Offending Team - Anti Bullying
The Mathew Project - Drug and Alcohol Awareness
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service - Fire Safety

Cabinet Member for Fire and Community Protection, Richard Rockcliffe, said: "Crucial Crew continues to offer an invaluable learning experience to our schoolchildren. Learning through experience leaves a lasting impression and with ten agencies taking part this really is partnership working at its best. The 1000 youngsters taking part will, I am sure, enjoy the experience and take away many practical safety tips."

The event is being sponsored by The John Jarrold Trust, with the books sponsored by Norfolk fire and Rescue Service.

Caroline Jarrold, Secretary of the John Jarrold Trust said: "The Trust is very pleased to support Norwich Crucial Crew. This is an event which will give many local children a chance to understand more about taking responsibility for their own safety and that of others and increase their awareness of the potential dangers which they may come across in everyday life. The fact that so many local agencies are involved is a great bonus as it boosts the children's knowledge of the support services which are active locally and may give them an insight into some of the future career opportunities which are available to them."
