Press Releases > Help us to help you plea from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service

With the extreme weather set to continue Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is appealing to people to exercise caution and stay safe this summer.

Local Risk Manager Graham Joy said: "Our message is simple; we live in a beautiful, scenic county which is there to be enjoyed, especially in the sunny weather, but please follow our advice and stay safe this summer. The summer holidays are about to start and Norfolk can expect an influx of holidaymakers and people out enjoying themselves. It continues to be very busy for us but there are things people can do help, much of it common sense."

The past few days have been the busiest of the year for the fire and rescue service, which is part of Norfolk County Council. On Saturday and Sunday the service's Control Room received nearly 300 calls, 65 of which were fires. Monday was no different with numerous calls to grass, field and crop fires across Norfolk.

With temperatures predicted to rise over the next couple of days people are being asked to take care, especially in the countryside.

As well as issuing general safety advice about being careful with matches, barbecues and discarded cigarettes fire officers are asking people to please be aware of the following:

  • Don't have a bonfire of any size during the extreme weather. This is particularly important in rural areas.
  •  If you see a fire please ring 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service even for a small fire, it can very soon become a big fire and get out of control. We are very busy at the moment but never too busy to answer your call.
  • For anyone working on the land it is essential to have at least one, preferably water, fire extinguisher on your vehicle. If possible have a water bowser, slurry tanker or sprayer nearby when harvesting or bailing.
  • Do not fill your fuel tank completely full during hot weather. Fuel must have room to expand.
  • Anyone planning to use fireworks is asked to exercise extreme caution in the current conditions as a stray firework is an obvious hazard.
