High Volume Pump

 Next Photo

East Anglia is far more prepared for floods and major fires, thanks to a state of the art pump that is based at Thetford. The new pump, mounted on a specially built MAN chassis, will be able to remove thousands of gallons of water in minutes, as well as bringing water to fight fires in locations away from a water supply.

Thetford was chosen as the location for this £250,000 vehicle due to its easy access to Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, but it can be used at a National level -  the vehicle and crews from Thetford were involved in the recent Major fire at Buncefield and similar vehicles were involved in the serious flooding in 2005 at Carlisle.

The High Volume Pump is part of the Government’s £200 million New Dimension programme to develop mass decontamination, urban search and rescue and high volume pumping capability nationally. This programme which was brought in to deal with terrorism can also be used for natural disasters as well.
