Press Releases >Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service helps fight floods

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service were contacted by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to assist them with releasing the pressure on the Ulley Dam.  The pressure has been mounting due to the severe weather conditions that this area of the country has seen over the last few days.

Norfolk responded, and yesterday morning (26 June 2007) a crew of five from Thetford Fire Station drove up to Sheffield, with the HVP (High Volume Pump) accompanied by Station Manager Trevor Leggett.  For more information about our High Volume Pump please click here.

Norfolk’s HVP was one of 15 in use at Ulley, Norfolk’s HVP alone pumping approximately 300-360 tonnes of water per hour.  Norfolk’s crew are now returning home, leaving their pump in situ, to carry on helping with this massive task.  The Enviromental Agency and Local Authority are working on strengthening the dam while the HVP’s carry on pumping.

Last night between the hours of 12 midnight to 7 am the water dropped half a metre which was a fantastic result.

Trevor Leggett the accompanying Station Manager said “Norfolk’s crews are very pleased to be able to help South Yorkshire with this operation.  They, and all the other crews from around the country, worked very hard throughout the night.”

Norfolk’s HVP will remain in South Yorkshire until the dam is secure.
