A youngster who became trapped in the bars of his cot is to meet the firefighters who saved his life.
Two-year-old Harvey Newman, from Norwich, somehow got his head stuck in his cot and whilst en-route to the incident a fire crew from Bethel Street received notification he had gone into cardiac arrest.
When the crews arrived they ran inside to find the little boy stuck in the cot. One of the firefighters broke the cot apart and two other crew members started Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.
The youngster started to show signs of breathing and a pulse and was then handed over to the care of paramedics, who continued to do a great job. Harvey was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital where he made a remarkably swift recovery.
Chief Fire Officer for Norfolk, Richard Elliott, said: "We are delighted that there was such a happy ending and that Harvey has made a full recovery. This must have been an extremely distressing ordeal for Harvey's family and his recovery is wonderful news for all concerned. There is little doubt that they saved young Harvey's life and should be justifiably proud of their actions and I would like to formally thank them all."
Wyndham Northam, Cabinet Member for Fire and Community Protection, said: "I would like to add my thanks to the firefighters involved. Their quick thinking and swift actions saved this little boy and I echo what the Chief Fire Officer has said - they should be very proud."
The incident highlights the commitment and professionalism of our fire crews when faced with such traumatic and difficult situations and all those firefighters concerned have been nominated for a Chief Fire Officer's Letter of Commendation.
Harvey and his family will visit Green Watch at Bethel Street on Saturday October 28 at 10am to say a personal thank you to the crew. For further information Martin Barsby, Communications Officer, Norfolk Fire Service, on 01603-819759, mobile 07919 492313 or martin.barsby@fire.norfolk.gov.uk
