Press Releases >NFRS in the Castle Mall 2007

Community Fire Safety (CFS) and Road Traffic Collision (RTC) Awareness
12th 13th 14th and 15th December 2007

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service will be holding its annual safety awareness week in the Castle Mall shopping centre in Norwich over the next few days.

The aim of the event is to provide shoppers with vital safety advice, particularly focussing on this time of year, and also raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The event has proved a real success, raising over £100,000 in total over previous years.

Station Manager Richard Smith, from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We will be on hand to give advice to people on how to stay safe in their homes as well as on the roads.

People will have the opportunity to sign up for a free home fire risk check where a member of the fire and rescue service comes to their home to give general fire safety advice, including around having working smoke alarms and planning what to do in the event of fire. We will also be giving out free smoke alarms and arranging to fit them for the most vulnerable.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the Mall and to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas.”

Also on the stand in Castle Mall will be an interactive car aimed at increasing awareness and the importance of road safety measures particularly for young drivers.

As usual the event will be selling plastic yellow fire helmets for charity.

Helen Chapman, Macmillan in Norfolk Community Fundraiser, said:” We’d like to thank the firefighters and fire officers from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service for their continued support this year. The money collected will go towards helping local people living with cancer and their families. We are really pleased to be working with the fire and rescue service again and hope shoppers will call in to Castle Mall and help them raise even more money than last year.”

As well as offering safety advice to shoppers businesses will also be able to receive legislative fire safety advice from the specialist fire safety team who will be in the Mall on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
