Fire & Emergency Support Service FESS

The fire and emergency support service (FESS) provides practical help and emotional support to vulnerable people affected by a domestic fire or similar incident anywhere across Norfolk. The 24 hour, 7 day a week service is delivered by trained British Red Cross volunteers using a specially adapted vehicle housed at Sprowston fire station in Norwich.

The FESS Vehicle with an NFRS Fire Engine

The longstanding partnership between Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and the British Red Cross has seen the FESS provide valuable support to hundreds of people in need after incidents across the county.
FESS can assist with:

  • Immediate temporary shelter in the FESS vehicle
  • Assistance in seeking temporary accommodation
  • First aid and emotional support > Sign-posting to other organisations
  • Support with the care of children and pets
  • Use of shower and toilet facilities
  • Clothing, toiletries and light refreshments
  • Use of a telephone and camera to assist with insurance claims.

The FESS is activated through the county’s fire control in respect to the circumstance of the incident and the request of responding fire crews.
The service is free to the people receiving it with all costs met by voluntary donations to the British Red Cross.

How to volunteer

Could you help others in an emergency?

As a volunteer run service, the FESS depends upon trained people giving their time to provide much needed help to people who have suddenly found themselves homeless following a fire or similar emergency including an evacuation, industrial accident or flood.
You will receive all the necessary training for the role to ensure that you are supported and the FESS continues to provide the vital support needed. You will though need to be patient and a good communicator whilst being someone who can bring a sense of calm to difficult and stressful situations.

You can find out more and register your interest to become a FESS volunteer online at: www.redcross.org.uk/feSs or by calling 01603 426361.
