Introduction:

Loddon fire station is a single fire appliance station with twelve personnel on a retained duty system. The station being one of three in the central cluster is overviewed by a Station Manager based at Carrow Fire Station. It covers mainly the local area but also supports Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service throughout the county. 

Loddon as a town is reasonably small with a population of around 4500, combined with the village of Chedgrave which joins at the River Chet. The station does provide cover for a large area, around 40 villages and parishes; this includes the River Chet, the River Yare and a large part of the southern Norfolk Broads. This is in addition to being so close to the Norfolk Suffolk border it often provides assistance to Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service, supporting them with their community. The station deals with a variety of incidents including all sorts of fires from small rubbish fires to large commercial premises fires, also chimney fires, road traffic accidents, hazardous materials, animal rescues, flooding, automatic fire alarms and assistance to other emergency services are just a few to choose from. Predominately a Fire and Rescue Service we will go to any incident when called upon to provide our assistance. At present the station averages around 150 calls a year, not only attending calls we also carryout community fire safety advice, with attending events and fetes to completing home fire risk assessments, as a whole providing an important service to the local community.

History:

Loddon fire station is located on the high street which is approximately in the town centre: the current station is the third generation in the parish. The first was at the junction of Beccles road and Norton road. The old station can still be seen today and is now used as a pair of garages; it still has the old chimney in place. The old engine was horse drawn, with the horse having to be caught, harnessed and hitched every time there was a call. In 1939 the station was moved to a new location, just over the bridge on the border of Loddon and Chedgrave. It was a wooden hut with a tortoise stove for heating and was situated on land owned by Cannells seed factory. Whilst at Cannells seeds there where two vehicles, one a converted lorry which was the water tender and also a Dennis trailer pump. These engines were sponsored by Norwich Union. The current station was built in 1956 (opened 1st December) and use to alert the fire-fighters to a call with an old air raid siren which was situated on top of the metal tower, which still stands in the drill yard today. The station acquired a new comer engine in 1960. This was followed by a Bedford in 1970 which had a petrol engine and could seat five in the back, next came a Dodge in 1980, a Dennis in 1985, and the Mercedes 1122 was 1990, this was at the station for some time with the specialist capabilities of rescue equipment taking on the role as a rescue appliance. In 2004 a Scania was presented to the station, this type was one of only two in the whole brigade and still is. This was only 2 years old when it came to Loddon from Sprowston fire station. We currently have the MAN rural appliance with 4x4 capabilities which was delivered late 2012; this is one of ten across the brigade being a specialist appliance these are to aid with potential of flooding incidents, heathland and forest fires in addition to the other incidents that a rescue appliance attends. Some of the specialist equipment this appliance carries includes water rescue equipment, rescue sled, enhanced hydraulic rescue equipment, airbags and a compressed air foam system. Not only carrying this additional equipment to other appliances these can also seat up to nine personnel. Another new addition to Loddon station is a small inflatable surface rescue boat. This will also aid in flooding incidents and can be used to back current rescue boats within the brigade.

The Crew:

The Loddon crew is currently fully established with twelve personnel on station, one Watch Manager two Crew Managers and nine Fire-fighters. They have a wide range of primary employments including USAR Technician, Whole time Fire-fighters, Self Employed personnel, Business owners, Boat Builders, Window / Commercial Cleaner, Engineer / Machinist,  Postman, Equipment Technician, Transport Manager and  Duty Retail Manager therefore bringing a variety of skills which contribute to making a very effective team. Being a retained fire-fighter is looked at as a part-time job to most, but the crew take their role very seriously, meeting the national occupational standards which are set to become competent as a fire-fighter. This is established by completing various training courses at the services training centre, development programmes and continuous training on weekly drill nights. The drill nights at Loddon are two to three hours on every Monday. In addition to the training the fire appliance is checked and all of the operational equipment tested ensuring everything is ready for the crew when there is a call.

Loddon on Call:

Loddon station also houses a volunteer medical group known as Loddon on Call. This group answers medical calls in the local area. Having specialist equipment like AED’s (Automatic External Defibrillator) they can often be first on scene to emergency medical calls, providing an important assistance to ambulance service. This team of volunteers are made up of people from all over the local community. The team use a part of the station as a base to work from and a place to carry out their training. This group is a separate team of personnel to the fire crew, but like the fire station personnel this is a key component to the local community.

How to Find the Station

The New Fire Station at Ryston Close was opened on the 16th June 2006, having moved from the Priory road site which had provided 70 years of service to the community, during that time the town and local area had developed to a point where a larger modern station with better access was required.
This is a very active station dealing with incidents over a large area, including major road and rail networks, river systems, Industrial estates, and a growing population
Each year Downham Market compile their station plan.  The plan enables the station management team to ensure that they are well prepared to deal with emergency in the local and wider areas.
The priorities for 2009/10 are:

3. Utilise opportunities to generate HFRC referrals for older people.
PROTECTION
SERVICE PRIORITY: SMOKE DETECTORS
Increase the number of working smoke detectors in domestic dwellings
STATION PRIORITIES:

2. Fit or provide smoke alarms in properties visited during emergency calls where none exist.
