If you need a school visit we target these at Year 2 for Key Stage 1, Year 5 for Key Stage 2 and Year 8 for Key Stage 3. If you have someone who is fire-setting and wish to discuss this with one of our advisors please contact us. We are sometimes also able to attend Community events but this will depend on resources, and we tend to target this to priority areas of our service. We do always look forward to hearing from you with any other queries.
This section contains notes written by the crews of this station.
Opened in 1972, with 2 pumping appliances and staffed with 28 full time and 10 retained personnel the station has undergone significant changes. The station was downgraded from the 4 watch system to Day Crewing in 1983, a further downgrading in 1997, left the station with "cover from Home" or Retained staff only. This resulted in the redeployment of our 2nd Pumping appliance and the loss of the Foam Salvage Tender and Surface Rescue Boat.
Resources are now left with 1 pump, and 2 foam trailers crewed by 14 retained staff.
Retirements and recruitment continue with additions of Dean Bracey, Darren Palmer, Terry Wilson, Andy Westgate and Aaron Tills. These lads have all adapted well to the fire service and are eager to continue in the best traditions of the service at Gorleston, especially as the remainder of us are getting older!
The cadet unit was first formed in 1982, and has remained in being ever since. It has been the model for many national units. Changes were pioneered here that include ex-cadets returning to become instructors, and thus pass on their own experience to the new members. Simon Mason, once a cadet himself runs the unit with assistance from his wife and retained Firefighter Dave Cook. Simon is also a full time Watch Manager at Bowthorpe Training and Assessment Centre as well as being the Watch Manager in charge at Martham. This goes to prove the worth and value that can be achieved from cadet units.
The staff has completed another quiet year with emergency calls reduced again, which is undoubtedly the result of very effective Community safety campaigning throughout Norfolk. This is set to continue this year with a slightly more ambitious program targeting the surrounding villages of Hopton and Belton.
The station is pleased to continue its links with the brigade Commercial Training department who regularly hold training sessions on station. Similar links with Gt. Yarmouth 'Responsible Authorities Group' (RAP) and the Police Neighbourhood Action Teams (NAT) will carry on as before.
