The small market town of Hingham, which was once the home of Samuel Lincoln, a direct ancestor of Abraham Lincoln (the 16th President of the USA) is located approximately 16 miles west of Norwich. The rural town is situated in the centre of the local towns of Watton, Wymondham, Dereham and Attleborough making it an ideal place to stay in order to explore the local surroundings. Figures provided from the 2001 census shows that Hingham is home to approximately 110,708 people. The village boasts a number of small independent shops as well as a Primary School on Hardingham Street and St Andrews Church which dates back to the 14th Century.
Hingham Fire Station
In 1959 Hingham Fire Station moved from the Fairlands to Norwich Street. The first appliance to be based at this new fire station was a Comma 86A, registration 1948 NG. This appliance has a Hayward Tyler Pump and carried a Coventry climax featherweight pump.
In 1977 the Comma 86A was replaced with a Dodge K850, registration RVF 639R. This appliance had a Godiva low pressure pump which used 500 gallons per minute.
Thirteen years later in 1990 the Dodge K850 was replaced with a Mercedes 1222, registration F517 DVF. This appliance had a 50o gallon per minute pump and was the first appliance at Hingham to have Hydraulic Rescue Equipment stowed on it.
The current fire engine based at Hingham is a Mercedes 1124, registration P743 ONG. This appliance was first put on the run at Hingham in2004. Under the supervision of SubO Adcock the appliance is manned by 10 fire-fighters. The current appliance is known as a Water Tender and it has a call sign of HIN17. The water tender is equipped with equipment which can be used by the fire-fighters at a range of incidents, including road traffic collisions and chimney fires.
The fire-fighters at Hingham meet once a week on a Thursday night for a drill night. During this time the fire-fighters participate in drills and lectures in order to maintain their competencies as fire-fighters.
