The first fire appliance at Wroxham was established in the late 1930’s and consisted of a Coventry Climax trailer pump. This pump was variously housed in a barn and the blacksmiths shop, before a purpose built station was constructed entirely by part-time personnel from the village Brigade. A second purpose built station was opened in 1950, before the construction of the present station in 1968.
Wroxham Fire Station today consists of a single Mercedes Benz 1122 water tender ladder fire appliance. This is manned by 12 retained fire-fighters who respond locally from their homes or places of work on the activation of their pagers.
Many of the crew are self employed which helps with the unpredictable nature of retained fire calls, while others are shift workers or work for local company’s which have a long standing agreement to allow them to leave work when alerted to crew the fire engine for an incident.
Incidents attended
Due to the stations close proximity to the city of Norwich we are often called to assist the crews at incidents within the city. Some of the Larger and more memorable incidents attended by Wroxham crew were:
Norwich Central Library – 1st August 1994 - Norwich central library is gutted in a £4 million pound blaze, with priceless books and records lost for ever.
Norwich Assembly Rooms – 12th April 1995 - The 18th century Assembly House in Norwich is severely damaged by an afternoon blaze
Roys of Wroxham - 6th May 1995 -(Wroxham was first pump on scene as the department store was gutted in a 10 hour blaze that started in the early morning. This was not the first time Roy’s had been hit by a fire.
On August 18th, 1916 the store caught fire. But because the parish council had not paid any contribution to Norwich fire brigade, then run by the chief constable, they refused to turn out.
Insurers Norwich Union intervened, according to Brian Veriod’s history book on the brigade, but by this time it was too late to save the building. Soon afterwards the rules for call outs were changed to avoid such a repetition.
