Even though there has been a massive swing towards central heating provided by gas, oil, or electricity there are still a significant number of chimneys, which catch fire each year. Follow this common sense guidance to reduce the likelihood of your chimney catching fire.

Normal use:

• Ensure that your chimney is swept before use or after a seasonal break.
• Sweep regularly at least once a year but 2-3 times if you burn wood or logs.
• Make sure your appliance receives enough air to allow the fuel to burn properly.
• Use only suitable fuels for the appliance in use.
• Never overload the grate or appliance.
• Use spark guard and where applicable a childproof fireguard. These devices are designed to minimise accidents around the fireplace.
• Inspect the chimney structure annually. This should include the breast, any flue, lining and areas where the chimney passes through floor levels, inside cupboards and into lofts. The brickwork and mortar should be sound and not allow smoke or soot to escape. Pay special attention if the chimney passes through a thatched roof. Do not forget to include the stack and pot.

If you suspect your chimney is on fire: DIAL 999 and ask for the Fire Service

• Sparks or a fall of soot in the hearth is often the first indication and is often accompanied by a roaring sound.
• You can put very small splashes of water onto the live coals of an open fire to kill the fire in the grate.
• This will send steam up the chimney and often put out small fires.
• Do not apply water to metal or cast appliances as this may cause them to fracture.
• Keep the spark guard in place.
• Remove any fittings and furnishings from the area directly in front of the fireplace.
